"What can I say? The Spectrum Band is awesome - they're the best. All my guests said that the band jacked the "class" level of our reception up several notches. And as for sound - they can't be beat - just listen to their demo! They were also incredibly easy to work with - this is coming from a total control freak who wanted everything to be perfect, down to the last detail. The Spectrum Band worked with me, were totally flexible, listened to what I wanted and made it happen. And guess what? They WERE perfect, down to the last detail. I needed some pretty detailed music editing from CDs for our ceremony and Tim weaved it together perfectly, no questions asked. Except of course, "Is this what you wanted?" Other bands that I looked into didn't really want to listen to what I wanted, and were completely inflexible. The other guys said, "Here's what we do." The Spectrum Band said, "How can we help make your day perfect?" I told them, and they did it! One of the best parts of the planning process is that Tim is an incredibly detailed and organized manager. This was such a relief and it took all the pressure off so we could concentrate on other parts of the planning. There was never any worry about the band, and they really came through and delivered a performance we all remember. I don't remember that much dancing at any other reception I've been to. I was a bit nervous about hiring a band that had never played a "commitment ceremony" but I needn't have been - they did a terrific job and were clearly very happy to do it. They adapted to our situation perfectly. They even showed some creative spontaneity that went over well with our guests (and us)! They have tons of experience and Tim (the leader) was by far the most professional of everyone that we contacted. He has been interviewed by a lot of wedding magazines because of his experience and we really liked having a seasoned professional in charge of the entertainment for our reception. A lot of the demo CDs that we received were kind of cheesy but Spectrum's was far above the rest (IMO). They even sent us a DVD so we could watch them and it's excellent and fun but we still went to see them live to meet Tim and Mary. They had already sold us with their sound and personality but when we saw them live they even look great on the stage so we're excited for our "big day" to finally arrive. They have a 4-piece group but we wanted the full 8-piece (I think you have to get the 8-piece on Saturday nights). Another feature that we wanted was both a male and female vocalist (Mary is awesome) and also a real brass section (trumpet and saxophone) so they could play all the big band and swing songs we wanted. We just love that new "RED" radio station that plays the swing and jazz music. Price was very competitive for an 8-piece band and we hired Spectrum for 6 hours of music. I would recommend that you compare this with all bands. Some have really high prices (with small bands) for some reason but we scratched them from our list. I have to leave for work now. They have a male and a female singer and are not at all cheesy. I wanted exactly what you want...the good mix of big band, ballads, newer stuff, funky stuff, etc. I would say they were one of my best vendors. There were a few things I could tell them "just do whatever" and they handled everything wonderfully. For instance, my mother-in-law was having a fit because we wanted to be introduced into the dining room by the emcee of the band. She thought this was tacky. So I spoke with Tim (manager and drummer of the band) and he said it would be handled elegantly...and it was! NO worries! They will learn any special song you want them to play, if it's not already on their play list. They played everything from "September" by Earth, Wind and Fire to "Don't Know Why" by Nora Jones to "Fly Me to the Moon" by Frank Sinatra. They even had a member who does an AWESOME impression of Louis Armstrong and sang "What A Wonderful World." One thing they don't play much of is country music, which is why I liked them. I just don't like country music. They know a few country songs, but they don't have a country sound. They also offer cocktail hour musicians like a single pianist, jazz trio, or jazz sextet.
